Tips for Finding the “Hard-to-Locate” Documents

Every employer’s 401(k) or benefits site is set up differently, so the exact location of certain documents can vary a lot. The goal of this guide is to give you a general sense of where you might look for the items on your checklist.

If you’ve searched around and still can’t track something down, don’t stress—we’ll go through it together during your Get Organized meeting.

Which documents are usually most difficult to find?

There are three big ones:

1. Employer Retirement Plan: Investment Options + Fee Details

  • Log in to your retirement plan website

  • Look for titles like:

    • “Fee Disclosure”

    • “404(a)(5) Participant Fee Disclosures”

    • “Plan Investment Options”

    • Or anything close to those

  • Common menu sections:

    • Plan Documents

    • Investments

    • Disclosures

2. Employer Retirement Plan: Summary Plan Description (SPD)

What this document usually includes:

  • A longer document titled “Summary Plan Description”

  • A detailed overview of how your employer’s retirement plan works

    • Plan Information

3. Employee Benefits Booklets + Summary of Your Elections

This is usually actually two separate documents:

  1. Benefits Guide / Overview

    • Describes all benefits your employer offers

    • Explains the options you can choose from

  2. Benefits Summary / Confirmation of Elections

    • Shows the benefits you personally enrolled in

    • Often includes medical, dental, life insurance, disability, etc.

Where you might find them:

  • Sometimes emailed during open enrollment

Quick Tip

If you can’t locate something by navigating through the menu, try using the site’s search bar — it’s often the fastest route.
